We believe it’s wrong to pit the environment against the economy, and that the government should prioritise solutions that we know can generate jobs while reducing emissions, lowering energy bills, and restoring nature.

The UK is already far off-track from meeting its legally binding climate targets.

After our historic court win last year, the government must produce a stronger climate plan this year, but approving this expansion is a step in the wrong direction and will send emissions, air pollution, and noise congestion soaring.

Last year, after ClientEarth, Good Law Project and Friends of the Earth’s legal challenge, the High Court found the UK government’s climate strategy to be unlawful for the second time, and as a result of the court ruling, they need to produce a new plan that adds up.

However, this week the Chancellor announced support for a new runway at Heathrow which will lock in millions of tons of carbon emissions and throw the UK even further off track from hitting its legally binding climate targets.

As my MP, I would like to know how these new announcements are compatible with the climate plan we need.

Instead of going ahead with these damaging proposals, I would like the Prime Minister to keep to the strong climate announcements he made at COP29, with new climate targets that harness all the opportunities of the UK economy.

This includes adopting readily available solutions that we know can deliver emissions cuts, while generating jobs and lowering energy bills as well as restoring nature.

There are specific actions that will help to meet these goals, building on the recommendations of the UK Climate Change Committee. They include for example:

1. Delivering the public transport and active travel investment and infrastructure needed for people to travel sustainably and affordably;

2. Rolling out a mass insulation programme to eliminate wasted energy and costs while providing healthy and comfortable homes;

3. Invest in the grid to support the delivery of new wind and solar projects;

4. Leading a nature- and climate-positive approach to land use, including by a vast increase in tree planting and peat restoration.

The time to act is now, and we need action on these urgent recommendations while not undoing them with damaging new projects.
