10 years on from the original Dieselgate scandal, little action has been taken to protect our health from millions of illegally polluting diesel vehicles. 

Following our legal complaints in 2023, the Department for Transport has confirmed it is investigating some 47 different car models under 20 brands by 11 manufacturers, and that these numbers will increase. But the process has been too slow, with no official recalls yet, and UK laws inadequate to deal with the problem*. 

That is why we need to demand that we act now. 

The harm done has already been too great. If no measures are taken to remove prohibited defeat devices, the report estimates an additional 6,000 premature deaths and £36 billion in economic impacts, between 2025 and 2040.

* The government does not yet have the legal tools they need to require manufacturers to effectively recall and fix non-compliant vehicles. The Environment Act 2021 gave the government the power to create such laws but, over three years later, proposals for these have still not been published.
