Tell UK Environment Minister: End Destructive Fishing in UK Seas Now

As world leaders meet at the UN Ocean Conference in June, we have a unique chance to protect UK and international seas.

Show the UK Environment Minister that British people want the ocean protected, not pillaged for short-term profit.

This conference couldn’t come at a more crucial time: our UK seas are on the verge of collapse, less than half of UK fishing limits are sustainable [1], and up to 90% of Marine Protected Areas threatened by bottom trawling [2].

We have a rare opportunity to push the government to protect the ocean. UK government ministers will be there, and charities, including ClientEarth, will also be present to make sure they turn the tide on ocean protection.

As we push for these crucial changes, there are also some big corporates trawling the precious seabed, and even planning to mine the deep sea which could destroy precious marine biodiversity

That’s why we need to come together at this crucial moment and use our collective voice.

Dear Mr Reed,
 
As the Secretary of State responsible for protecting our ocean, I ask that you show international leadership at UNOC and deliver domestic action- your pressure is key in this crucial meeting for the ocean.  
 
The ocean is at a tipping point after decades of industrial fishing, drilling and plastic pollution. In the tiny portion of areas that are protected, we still allow huge trawlers to destroy marine life and habitats.  
 
ClientEarth are attending UNOC as well, and alongside global and regional policy asks, they have specific UK asks that will help protect our ocean and help it to thrive once again:
 
1. Ban bottom trawling in protected areas in the UK, and enforce that ban
 
2. End overfishing and safeguard ecosystem health, productivity and resilience
 
3. Champion the Global Charter for Fisheries Transparency to ensure sustainability and legality from catch to plate
