Heatwaves, floods, droughts – the climate crisis is already here. Yet the UK government’s climate plan has been ruled unlawful twice for failing to show how the plan will keep us on track to meeting our targets, while relying heavily on high-risk, unproven technologies like carbon capture.

With a new plan due by October, this is our moment to demand a stronger plan that cuts emissions, lowers bills, and creates jobs - not one that gives billions to the fossil fuel industry to develop high-risk carbon capture technology.

The courts have already spoken. Now it’s time the government listened to the public.

No matter who we are or where we live, we all deserve a healthy environment, clean energy, and affordable bills - not more delays and continued reliance on expensive and high-risk fossil-fuel technologies.

I am writing to you as your constituent to ask you to write to the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero on my behalf to ask that the upcoming UK government climate plan delivers the action that our community needs to tackle climate change and improve quality of life for all. The effectiveness of this plan will define our present and the future of our children and grandchildren.

Previous versions of the Carbon Budget Delivery Plan have been declared unlawful by the High Court, after challenges by ClientEarth and others, and the government must now publish a revised plan by 29 October. With less than 100 days to go this is a key moment to make sure the plan reduces greenhouse gas emissions to contribute towards limiting global temperature increases to as close to 1.5 degrees Celsius as possible.

From increasing heatwaves harming people’s health, the lack of rain reducing food production and making lives harder for farmers, to wildfires and floods threatening or destroying homes, nature and crops, and warming seas around our coast affecting our precious marine life: climate change is happening now in the UK but there is hope that we can redirect our path towards a better future than the one we are heading for – if the government can set robust and credible plans to drive action.

And there is also a vital opportunity to make people’s lives better by taking action now. For example, insulating homes will reduce bills, make people’s homes more comfortable, improve health, and tackle fuel poverty. Investing in public transport will help people get where they need to, reduce congestion, improve road safety and air quality.

These are the sort of win-win policies the government needs to go big on. Investing billions of public money on high-risk solutions, such as carbon capture and storage, instead of these win-win policies, is a lost opportunity to reduce emissions and improve people’s everyday lives now.

I hope that you agree with me and I would like you to write to the Secretary of State, Ed Miliband, on my behalf to ask that the government ensures that the upcoming climate plan is bold and robust and focuses on credible solutions that will make people’s lives better now. I would also appreciate any updates on this and to understand what else you are doing to tackle this important issue for our local communities and the country as a whole.
