As we are entering the negotiation phase of the next EU Budget (Multiannual Financial Framework – MFF), the way Europe allocates funding for ocean and fisheries is at a crossroads.

Current subsidies under the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) too often fuel overcapacity, pollution, and inequality, instead of protecting the marine environment and supporting small-scale, low-impact fishers and coastal communities.

This high-level discussion will bring together fisher representatives, NGOs, experts, and policymakers to assess the Commission’s proposal and explore how funds can be redirected to deliver real socio-economic benefits, strengthen resilience to climate change, secure a healthy ocean for future generations, and uphold the goals outlined in the European Ocean Pact presented at UNOC.

This event is part of Ocean Week and will highlight the urgent need for fair distribution of funds, ocean protection, and a just transition for Europe’s blue economy.
